Plant Guide: Amaryllis

Amaryllis 'Cherry Bloss'

The softly scented, multi-flowered inflorescences of this beautiful South American bulb appear on sturdy, purplish-green stems up to 60 cm (2 ft) tall. The trumpet-shaped flowers are pink or white and develop on the flower stem earlier than the leaves.

This plant is best suited to warm climates; in the UK it is usually grown under protection, as it flowers in autumn and its glossy, strap-shaped leaves remain visible throughout winter and early spring. It is an excellent cut flower. The bulbs flower best if left undisturbed for several years.

GROWING CONDITIONS

Aspect
Preferably a warm, sheltered spot in full sun – bulbs need plenty of summer heat to flower well.

Position
Best planted in flower borders against a south-facing wall. Amaryllis belladonna can also be grown in large containers, with individual bulbs planted about 20 cm (8 in) apart. Free-draining soil is essential. A light, sandy soil is suitable, but best results are achieved by incorporating organic matter into the soil about a month before planting.

CULTIVATION

Planting
If you have a warm garden, plant the bulbs at the beginning of summer, deep enough so that the neck of the bulb remains level with the soil surface. Space bulbs 20–30 cm (8–12 in) apart.

Feeding
Apply fertiliser once flowering has finished, when the leaves begin to emerge. Water during dry periods in the growing season.

Problems
Problems are rare.

FLOWERING

Season
Late summer to autumn.

Cutting
Very suitable for large bouquets and floral arrangements.

AFTER FLOWERING

Care
Cut back spent flower stems. Protect the leaf rosette in winter with a layer of garden fleece. Allow bulbs to rest for several years. If you wish to lift and divide them, do so in summer.
