Sweetly scented hyacinths are extremely popular in gardens and pots. They look best when planted in large groups of the same color. They are widely grown commercially as cut flowers and potted plants. Flower stems reach 15–30 cm, with colors ranging from blue and pink to white, cream, and yellow. The tightly packed flowers form a compact spike. Hyacinth bulbs usually bloom best in their first year; in later years the flowers are fewer and looser. People with sensitive skin may experience irritation, so wearing gloves is recommended when handling the bulbs.
