Where do arum lilies come from?

The Zantedeschia , also known as arum lily or calla lily , consists of tuberous rhizomes. This plant has several varieties with a wide variety of colors.

Arum lilies are native to moist soils, swamps, and lakeshores in southern East Africa. They are cultivated worldwide for their striking inflorescences.

The Elliottiana group has large, broad leaves, often speckled. The inflorescence consists of a yellow spathe and a yellow spadix.

The rehmannii group has narrow, lance-shaped dark green leaves, with flowers in white, pink or dark purple, surrounding a yellow spadix.

The best-known species is Zantedeschia aethiopica , with large white flowers—often used as a houseplant. This species is sensitive to frost, but hardy cultivars also exist.

Please note: all arum lilies like lots of water .

“Callas have long been a favorite of florists for their sturdiness and sculptural shape, which adds structure to a floral arrangement.”

Characteristics of the arum lily

Arum lilies are beloved for their waxy flowers , usually pure white with a striking yellow spadix. The leaves are arrow- or heart-shaped and deep dark green. The plant can grow to over 1 meter tall.

Some species can only grow in a greenhouse or conservatory, but many Zantedeschias also do well in a sheltered garden .

They like a moist spot with peaty soil , which ensures profuse flowering.

“Pure white flowers and decorative foliage characterize the arum lily, which is relatively easy to grow under various conditions.”

Growing conditions

Location : Full sun to shade
Prefer shelter from the wind
Moist, humus-rich soil is essential — for example along a pond or in a wet border

Callas do particularly well along waterfronts, where the soil is often moist and rich in organic material.

Planting arum lilies

Planting time : In spring, April
Planting depth : 15 cm deep
Distance : 45 cm between each plant

Zantedeschia grows best when you ensure sufficient moisture in the soil during dry periods. This stimulates root development and flowering.

Once the flowers have fully opened, you can cut them for a vase — they will stay beautiful for a long time!
